Today’s schedule was a little different, as we didn’t leave to go to St. Cyprian’s until the afternoon. The reason for the change was to give us an opportunity to meet and talk with the parents of the young students that we are interviewing. It has been an amazing experience to step into the lives of the people here, helping us to come to a deeper understanding of their lives and culture. One important aspect of the Fante people is the assigning of a day name at birth. Each of our students has both a day name and a “Christian” name. So, what is yours?
Date of Birth | Female | Male |
Sunday | Esi | Kwesi |
Monday | Adwowa | Kodwo |
Tuesday | Abena | Kobena |
Wednesday | Ekuwa | Kweku |
Thursday | Aba | Yaw |
Friday | Efuwa | Kofi |
Saturday | Amba | Ato |
Until next time…

Hi there, Don. Thanks for putting the link on my fb page.
ReplyDeleteSo... my day name is Ekuwa. Many years ago I taught a delightful young guy named Kofi. I wonder, now, if his parents gave him a day name... hmmm!
How long will you be in Ghana?
We'll be in Ghana until July 24th. We leave for a week of traveling to historic and culturally significant sites in northern Ghana on July 9th but will be blogging while on the road.
